Just days after completing his training, a young deputy in South Carolina lost his life in the line of duty. Here's what we know about the heartbreaking incident that has shaken the Darlington County community. A newly trained South Carolina deputy was shot and killed in an ambush while attempting to arrest a suspect at a home early Tuesday morning, according to authorities. Deputy Devin Mason, 27, had only just finished his field training last week. He and another deputy responded to a residence near Lamar around 1:30 a.m., aiming to apprehend a wanted individual, the Darlington County Sheriff’s Office reported. Upon entering the home, both deputies were suddenly attacked. Tragically, Mason succumbed to his injuries. The second deputy, whose name has not yet been released, was hospitalized and is currently in stable condition. The suspect involved, 25-year-old Cameron Ray Dennett, was also killed during the encounter. Dennett had outstanding charges, including criminal conspiracy, forgery, and a computer crime. Authorities also noted he was legally prohibited from possessing a firearm. A 28-year-old woman, Kristen Porter, was also arrested at the scene. She was wanted on charges similar to those faced by Dennett. Deputy Mason joined the sheriff’s office in 2024 and graduated from the South Carolina Criminal Justice Academy in March. He had only completed field training days before the fatal incident. “In his time with us, he demonstrated unwavering dedication, integrity, and professionalism,” said Sheriff Michael August. “Deputy Mason served the people of Darlington County with heart and honor. Though his time with us was far too short, his impact will not be forgotten.” At this time, no additional details about the shooting have been released. Our thoughts are with Deputy Mason’s family, friends, and fellow officers as they mourn this devastating loss.
