Russian strikes kill 25 in Ukraine, as Trump confirms deadline for talks

At least 25 people have been killed across Ukraine following a series of overnight and early morning Russian air strikes, according to local officials. The attacks targeted multiple civilian areas, including a prison, a hospital, and a humanitarian aid site, drawing international outrage and renewed calls for action.

The deadliest strike occurred at the Bilenke penitentiary in the Zaporizhzhia region, where four Russian glide bombs hit just before midnight. The blasts destroyed the prison’s dining hall, quarantine section, and administrative building. Authorities reported 16 inmates killed and over 50 others injured—44 of whom required hospitalization. Initially, officials stated 17 deaths, but this was later revised.

Ukraine’s justice ministry condemned the attack, calling it a breach of humanitarian law, emphasizing that prisoners still retain the right to life and protection under international conventions.

In the Kharkiv region, a separate Russian rocket strike killed five people in the village of Novoplatonivka. According to police, the victims were queuing outside a shop to receive humanitarian aid when the missile struck. Harrowing photos released by Ukrainian officials showed bodies lying near the destroyed building.

Another deadly strike hit a hospital in Kamianske, Dnipropetrovsk region, killing three people, including a 23-year-old pregnant woman named Diana. One more death was reported elsewhere in the region, bringing the total toll to at least 25.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky responded by urging the international community to impose “tough” sanctions on Russia, saying, “Russia must be forced to stop the killings and make peace.”

Meanwhile, U.S. President Donald Trump reaffirmed his ultimatum to Moscow. During a visit to the UK on Tuesday, Trump confirmed an August 8 deadline for Russia to agree to a ceasefire or face sweeping new sanctions. This shortens the original 50-day deadline he had issued to Russian President Vladimir Putin earlier this month.

Despite earlier warnings, Russia has continued its offensive. On Tuesday, Moscow claimed its forces were advancing in Ukrainian territory and had taken control of the village of Maliivka—claims Ukraine denies.

Across the border in Russia, Ukraine reportedly launched dozens of drone strikes overnight in the Rostov region. Russian officials say one person was killed in their car in the town of Salsk, while another was killed and his wife injured in the Belgorod border region. A goods train also caught fire during the drone assault.

As both sides continue to trade attacks and accusations, the human toll continues to rise, with civilians bearing the brunt of the violence.
